**Chennai, March 3, 2025** – The Southern bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has demanded an update from the Tamil Nadu government regarding its progress in restoring the severely polluted Ennore Creek. The order follows a petition filed by environmental activist K. Saravanan, urging the official recognition of the Ennore wetland under the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017, and a detailed action plan for its restoration.
The NGT bench, comprising Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana and expert member Satyagopal, specifically requested information from the Tamil Nadu State Wetland Authority on the steps taken to revive the creek. The petition also highlighted the ₹40 crore allocated for the restoration and called for a report detailing the extent of illegal wetland conversion and efforts to rectify it.
The court noted a government order including Ennore Creek’s restoration under the Tamil Nadu Sustainable Harnessing Ocean Resources and Blue Economy (TN SHORE) initiative, assigning responsibility to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB). Expert member Satyagopal emphasized the creek’s ecological significance to Chennai, questioning whether it’s included in the National Wetland Atlas by ISRO.
The next hearing is scheduled for April 23, 2025.
