Sun Mar 02 12:10:00 UTC 2025: **Top Runners Ready for 2025 Tokyo Marathon Showdown**
TOKYO – The 2025 World Marathon Majors kicks off this weekend in Tokyo with a star-studded field set to compete in the 18th edition of the Tokyo Marathon. Defending champion Benson Kipruto of Kenya will return to defend his title after setting a new course record last year. However, he faces stiff competition from Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei, the world record holder in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters, who will be making his second attempt at a marathon.
Cheptegei’s transition from track to road racing is a major storyline, following his impressive debut at the 2023 Valencia Marathon. Other top contenders in the men’s race include Deresa Geleta of Ethiopia, who finished second in Valencia last year.
The women’s race is equally compelling, with past champions returning to challenge reigning champion Sutume Asefa Kebede of Ethiopia. Former world record holder Brigid Kosgei of Kenya and Rosemary Wanjiru, also of Kenya, aim to reclaim the title. Tigist Ketema of Ethiopia, known for her record-breaking debut marathon win in Dubai, also presents a significant threat.
Adding to the excitement, Paula Radcliffe, a former world record holder, will make a comeback at age 51, competing in Tokyo as part of her quest to become a six-star finisher in the World Marathon Majors series.
The race will be broadcast live on FloTrack for viewers in the U.S. and Canada at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, March 1st (Sunday, March 2nd in Japan). The marathon itself will start at 7:10 p.m ET. For Japanese elites, the marathon serves as a qualifier for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. The race promises to be a thrilling spectacle for running enthusiasts worldwide.
