**MIAMI, FL – March 3, 2025** – Former U.S. Congressman Lincoln Díaz-Balart, a prominent voice for Cuban democracy and immigrant rights, passed away Monday morning at the age of 70, his brother, Congressman Mario Díaz-Balart, announced.
Díaz-Balart, born in Havana in 1954, served 24 years in elected office, including 18 years representing South Florida’s Cuban-American community in the U.S. House of Representatives (1993-2011). He was a tireless advocate for democratic reforms in Cuba, successfully authoring legislation that linked the lifting of U.S. sanctions to the fulfillment of specific democratic conditions on the island.
His legacy also includes a key role in the creation of the Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act (NACARA), providing legal residency to thousands of immigrants. Furthermore, he co-founded the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI), dedicated to promoting Hispanic leadership in public policy.
Beyond his political career, Díaz-Balart remained a staunch advocate for human rights and democracy. He is survived by his wife Cristina, son Daniel, daughter-in-law Estefania, and grandsons Lincoln Daniel and Edwin Rafael, as well as his brothers Rafael, Jose, and Mario, and their families. He was predeceased by his eldest son, Lincoln Gabriel. A public memorial mass will be announced soon.
