Sun Mar 02 19:42:32 UTC 2025: ## Kochi to Issue Permits for Clean Energy Autorickshaws

**KOCHI, March 3, 2025** – The Ernakulam Regional Transport Authority (RTA) will issue 3,000 city permits for CNG/LPG and electric autorickshaws on March 30th, aiming to reduce air pollution in the city. A final list of eligible applicants will be published on March 10th.

While 1,267 applications were received for the 1,000 CNG/LPG permits, only 278 applications were submitted for the 2,000 electric autorickshaw permits. This disparity highlights a potential reluctance to adopt electric vehicles, despite their environmental benefits. The vehicles will operate under a fixed fare structure.

The initiative, announced by the Motor Vehicles department, prioritizes cleaner transportation options due to high pollution levels from fossil fuel vehicles. Electric autos produce zero emissions, while CNG autorickshaws are considered less polluting than petrol and diesel alternatives.

All permitted autorickshaws will feature off-white paint and a unique bonnet number. The allocation includes vehicles operated by those in the reservation category, Kochi Metro Rail Limited, and members of the Ernakulam Jilla Auto Drivers Cooperative Society. Vehicle inspections concluded on February 28th. Applicants were required to have vehicles less than seven years old and drivers must wear nameplates.
