Sat Mar 01 21:15:05 UTC 2025: ## First Measles-Related Death in Over a Decade Reported in US

**Houston, TX – March 2, 2025** – The United States has reported its first measles-related death in more than a decade, prompting urgent calls for increased vaccination rates. A school-aged child in unvaccinated in West Texas succumbed to the disease on February 26th, marking a tragic milestone in a growing outbreak.

Texas is the epicenter of the outbreak, with 146 confirmed cases as of February 28th. The virus has spread to at least nine states, hospitalizing several individuals. Neighboring New Mexico has also reported cases linked to the Texas outbreak.

Dr. Peter Hotez, a pediatrician and virologist at Baylor College of Medicine, attributed the outbreak to declining vaccination rates. He stressed that measles, highly contagious and easily spread through airborne particles, can quickly become widespread when vaccination coverage falls below 90%. The virus can cause severe complications, including pneumonia and brain swelling, particularly in young children.

While the MMR vaccine is highly effective and has virtually eradicated measles in the US since the early 2000s, vaccine hesitancy and exemptions are contributing to the current crisis. Of the 146 confirmed cases in Texas, only five individuals were vaccinated.

Health officials are urging parents to vaccinate their children with the MMR vaccine to prevent further spread. Maintaining high vaccination rates is crucial to protecting public health and averting future outbreaks, experts emphasize.
