**Jaipur, Rajasthan – March 1, 2025** – Rajasthan is reeling from an unexpected and intense weather event that has brought heavy rain and devastating hailstorms to several regions across the state. Areas such as Churu and Sardarshahar have been particularly hard hit, with images and videos circulating online showing streets blanketed in thick layers of hail.
Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Parveen Kaswan shared videos on social media depicting the extraordinary scenes, showing homes and open land covered in what appears to be a thick layer of snow. “No, this is not Kashmir. This is Churu of Rajasthan. Which sees up to 50 degrees in summer. Such extreme weather!!” Kaswan tweeted. He also highlighted the plight of farmers, expressing concern for the significant crop damage resulting from the severe weather.
The sudden downpour and hailstones have prompted the Meteorological Department to issue weather alerts for the affected regions. Significant crop damage has been reported in Sriganganagar, Churu, Kotputli-Behror, Bikaner, and Alwar, with some areas, including Shekhawati, experiencing a temperature drop of 2-3 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Centre in Jaipur forecasts further rainfall in districts within the Jaipur and Bharatpur divisions. While some areas recorded minimal rainfall (Hanumangarh – 2.5 mm, Ganganagar – 0.3 mm, Bikaner – 3.2 mm), Churu and Jaisalmer also experienced significant precipitation. However, the department anticipates an improvement in conditions from March 2nd onwards.
Despite the temporary respite, a heatwave warning has been issued for the coming months, with above-average temperatures expected from March to May. The contrasting extreme weather events underscore the unpredictable nature of the current climate patterns in the region.
