Fri Feb 28 16:21:28 UTC 2025: **UK Prime Minister Hosts Emergency Summit on Ukraine**

London, February 28, 2025 – UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will convene a summit in London on March 2nd, bringing together over a dozen European and EU leaders to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The meeting follows Starmer’s recent White House discussions with US President Donald Trump.

The summit aims to bolster European unity in supporting Ukraine and applying pressure on Russia. Attendees include leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Romania, Turkey, and representatives from NATO and the EU. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will also attend.

Prior to the main summit, Starmer will hold a call with Baltic leaders and a one-on-one meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Discussions will focus on strengthening Ukraine’s military position, increasing economic sanctions against Russia, and planning for long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.

A key point of discussion will be proposals for a European reassurance force to protect Ukraine, a plan that has reportedly caused friction between France and Italy. While Italy is considering participation in a NATO peacekeeping force, its government faces domestic pressure against sending troops to Ukraine. The summit will reiterate the need for a lasting peace deal, with Ukraine’s participation as a key component. However, despite Trump’s recent softer tone on potential truce talks, firm US security guarantees for Europe remain uncertain.
