Sun Mar 02 05:30:00 UTC 2025: ## LGBTQ+ Identification Nearly Triples in US, Driven by Gen Z: Gallup Poll

**Washington, D.C.** – A new Gallup poll reveals a dramatic surge in the percentage of U.S. adults identifying as LGBTQ+, nearly tripling since 2012 to reach nearly 10%. The significant increase, reported Thursday, is largely attributed to a substantial rise among young adults, particularly members of Generation Z (those aged 18-27).

The poll, based on 14,000 adults surveyed throughout 2023, found that a quarter of Gen Z identifies as LGBTQ+, with over half of that group identifying as bisexual. The increase in LGBTQ+ identification is also notable among transgender individuals, with 1.3% of all respondents identifying as transgender, a jump from 0.6% in 2020. Gen Z showed the highest percentage of transgender individuals at 4.1%, compared to 1.7% of millennials and less than 1% in older generations.

This significant rise comes amidst a backdrop of the Trump administration’s rollback of LGBTQ+ initiatives. Gallup’s survey, considered one of the most comprehensive of its kind, allows respondents to select multiple identities, making it a robust measure of the evolving landscape of LGBTQ+ identification in the United States. The data suggests a substantial shift in self-identification, particularly among younger generations.
