**Thane, Maharashtra (March 2, 2025)** – A 29-year-old man has been arrested in Thane, Maharashtra, for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl and forcing her to undergo an abortion using fraudulent documents. Police also arrested a doctor who provided abortion pills.
The accused, a neighbor of the victim, repeatedly raped the girl beginning last July, threatening her with violence if she revealed the assaults. When she became pregnant, he supplied her with abortion pills obtained from a private practitioner. When this attempt failed, the accused, along with his wife, mother, and mother-in-law, allegedly coerced the seven-months pregnant victim into an abortion at a Kalyan civic hospital using falsified identity documents. The foetus was subsequently buried at an Ulhasnagar crematorium.
The crime came to light on February 23 when the victim informed her mother. Following a police complaint, the accused man was arrested on February 25. The doctor who initially provided abortion pills was arrested on Saturday. The remaining four female accused are still at large.
The accused face charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for rape, forced abortion, and concealing evidence, as well as provisions under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The exhumed foetus will undergo further investigation.
