**Washington, D.C. –** A new Gallup poll reveals a significant increase in the percentage of U.S. adults identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ+). The 2024 survey found that 9.3% of adults now identify as LGBTQ+, a rise of over one percentage point from 2023 and nearly double the figure from 2020. This marks a substantial increase from 3.5% in 2012, when Gallup first began tracking this data.
The surge is primarily attributed to younger generations. Over 20% of Gen Z adults (born 1997-2006) identify as LGBTQ+, compared to significantly lower percentages in older generations. This age-related trend is consistent across all generational cohorts, with the lowest rate (1.8%) observed among the Silent Generation (born before 1946). The increase among younger generations has accelerated in recent years, with Gen Z showing a jump from 18.8% in 2020-2022 to 22.7% in the past two years. Millennials and Generation X also experienced smaller increases.
Bisexuality is the most commonly reported LGBTQ+ identity, particularly among younger LGBTQ+ individuals. More than half of Gen Z and millennial LGBTQ+ adults identify as bisexual, while this percentage decreases considerably in older generations. Older LGBTQ+ adults are more likely to identify as gay or lesbian.
The study, based on over 14,000 interviews, also reveals that 85.7% of respondents identified as heterosexual. Within the LGBTQ+ population, the breakdown is as follows: 5.2% bisexual, 2.0% gay, 1.4% lesbian, and 1.3% transgender. Nearly 1% identified with other LGBTQ+ identities.
Gallup attributes the rising trend to more young adults, particularly women, identifying as bisexual. Given ongoing generational shifts, the organization anticipates continued growth in LGBTQ+ identification rates.
