The temporary truce, proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, serves as a stopgap measure. Negotiations between Israel and Hamas for a permanent ceasefire have reached an impasse, according to Mr. Netanyahu’s office. The current extension follows a previous two-phase ceasefire that initially began on January 19th and concluded on Saturday. While the second phase aimed to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza, this goal has yet to be achieved.
