Greenwood, SC – Dr. Richard M. Carter, a prominent Greenwood physician and community leader, passed away peacefully on February 28th, 2025, at the age of 94. Dr. Carter, a resident of Idlewood, is survived by his wife, Nancy Steele Carter, and a large extended family including four children, numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A highly decorated individual, Dr. Carter was valedictorian of his high school class, an Eagle Scout, and a talented musician who played in bands throughout his college years at Clemson University and the Junior College of Augusta. His academic achievements continued into medical school, where he graduated with honors from the Medical University of South Carolina and was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. He served as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy before establishing a successful 38-year career in Otolaryngology (ENT) in Greenwood.
Beyond his medical practice, Dr. Carter was deeply involved in his community. A devout member of South Main Baptist Church, he taught a men’s Sunday school class for over 50 years, served as a deacon, and played trumpet in the church orchestra. He was also a dedicated member of the Greenwood Lions Club, receiving the Franklin B. Mason award and induction into the Lions Club Hall of Fame in 2023. His commitment to service extended to numerous medical professional organizations and mission trips with Volunteers in Medical Missions. He was a former member and past chairman of the board of trustees at Connie Maxwell Children’s Home.
Dr. Carter’s passions included birdwatching, which took him to all seven continents, gardening, and spending time with his family. He was known for his quick wit and happy laugh.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 PM at South Main Baptist Church, with burial following at Oakbrook Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Blyth Funeral Home on Monday evening from 5-7 PM. Memorials may be made to South Main Baptist Church or Connie Maxwell Children’s Home.
