**Chandigarh, March 1, 2024** – Haryana is experiencing a renewed chill following recent unseasonal rain and hailstorms. The meteorological department predicts this cold snap will persist for several days, with cool winds expected until March 5th, leading to a drop in nighttime temperatures.
Over the past two days, the state witnessed significant rainfall, with areas like Panipat, Ambala, and Hisar reporting over 10 mm. Most of Haryana experienced varying degrees of rainfall, from light showers to moderate rain and hail, excluding some parts of southern Haryana.
Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has directed officials to assess crop damage caused by the hailstorms and ensure compensation is provided to affected farmers through a dedicated portal.
Dr. Madan Khichad, head of the Agricultural Meteorology Department at Haryana Agricultural University, stated that the weather will remain changeable until March 5th due to a western disturbance. While daytime temperatures are expected to see a slight decrease, nighttime temperatures are likely to fall again after March 5th due to the onset of northwesterly winds.
The state experienced a weather shift on February 27th with light showers in several districts, followed by heavier rain and hail on February 28th. Twelve districts reported hail, including Hisar, Ambala, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Yamunanagar, Bhiwani, Jind, Charkhi Dadri, Rewari, Nuh, Palwal, and Mahendragarh. Several other districts experienced heavy rainfall.
Reports indicate that at least 20 villages in Jind district suffered wheat crop damage due to the hailstorms, prompting farmers to seek government compensation.
