**GUWAHATI, March 1, 2025** – The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) announced today that the proposed railway line connecting Kokrajhar, Assam, to Gelephu, Bhutan, has been expedited. Following Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s recent announcement of the project, the NFR completed the final locational survey and submitted the detailed project report to the government for approval.
The 69.04 km railway line, estimated to cost ₹3,500 crore, is expected to significantly boost trade and tourism between India and Bhutan. The project will include six new stations in Assam and one in Gelephu, as well as numerous bridges and overpasses. This railway will mark Bhutan’s first-ever rail connection, facilitating easier transportation and supporting Bhutan’s ambitious Gelephu Mindfulness City project. The NFR spokesperson emphasized the project’s role in strengthening bilateral ties between India and Bhutan.
