Tue Feb 25 08:02:09 UTC 2025: ## NASA’s SPHEREx Telescope to Create Most Colorful Map of the Cosmos
**Melbourne, Australia – February 25, 2025** – NASA is poised to launch the SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) telescope on February 27th, promising the most detailed and colorful map of the cosmos ever created. This relatively small infrared telescope will undertake a two-year mission with far-reaching implications for our understanding of the universe’s origins and the potential for life beyond Earth.
Unlike high-resolution telescopes like James Webb and Hubble, which focus on small sections of the sky, SPHEREx will survey the entire celestial sphere. This broad approach will allow it to capture spectroscopic images—measuring light wavelengths—from approximately one billion galaxies, 100 million stars, and 10,000 asteroids. This unprecedented dataset will provide crucial information on several key areas:
* **Cosmic Inflation:** By mapping the entire sky, SPHEREx will offer vital insights into the rapid expansion of the universe immediately after the Big Bang, a phenomenon still poorly understood.
* **Galaxy Formation and Evolution:** The telescope will track the 3D positions of billions of galaxies across cosmic history, creating a timeline of the universe’s development. This data will be used to test various theories about cosmic inflation.
* **The Search for Life:** SPHEREx will conduct a comprehensive census of icy biogenic molecules (like water, carbon dioxide, and methanol) within our galaxy. By pinpointing the location of these life-forming molecules, the mission aims to shed light on the process by which life originated. It’s expected to generate 8 million spectroscopic images of these molecules, a significant leap from the few thousand expected from the James Webb Space Telescope.
Associate Professor Deanne Fisher of Swinburne University highlights the transformative nature of the mission. The ability to map the entire sky will allow astronomers to identify promising regions for life and discern meaningful patterns from anomalies, marking a crucial step forward in the search for extraterrestrial life. SPHEREx’s unique capabilities, combined with its broad survey, promise to revolutionize our understanding of the universe and our place within it.
