**CHENNAI, March 1, 2025** – A new study published in *The Hindu* reveals a surprising level of altruism in anemonefish. Researchers have observed that these fish, known for their symbiotic relationship with sea anemones, actively share their food with their hosts. The study involved observing the feeding behavior of *Amphiprion clarkii* in their natural habitat.
The anemonefish were observed selectively consuming smaller food items like krill, clams, squid, and small fish, as well as small green macroalgae, for themselves. However, they consistently provided larger pieces of animal food to their host anemones. Interestingly, they avoided feeding their hosts – or themselves – brown macroalgae and sponges, suggesting an understanding of what constitutes suitable nutrition. When smaller food sources were available, the anemonefish prioritized their own needs before feeding the anemones.
This food provisioning has a significant impact on the anemones’ growth. Larger anemones produce more eggs, directly benefiting the anemonefish who rely entirely on their host for protection and shelter. Therefore, the study concludes that the observed food-sharing behavior is not coincidental but a deliberate strategy vital for the survival and reproduction of both species. The findings provide strong evidence of a complex and mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship exceeding previously understood behaviors.
