**New Delhi, March 1, 2025** – A Delhi court has dismissed a 2019 sedition case against former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) vice president Shehla Rashid Shora. The case, filed based on tweets allegedly criticizing the Indian Army, was withdrawn following the Delhi Lieutenant Governor’s V.K. Saxena’s withdrawal of prosecution sanction.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Anuj Kumar Singh granted the prosecution’s request on February 27. The prosecution cited the LG’s December 23, 2024 order, which followed a recommendation from a Screening Committee. The original complaint was lodged by Alakh Alok Srivastava.
The FIR accused Ms. Shora of promoting enmity between groups and inciting riots through tweets posted on August 18, 2019, which alleged that the Army was engaging in house-to-house searches and torturing civilians in Kashmir. These allegations were denied by the Army as baseless. The charges, which included sedition, carried a potential life sentence. The Delhi Police, with the support of the Delhi government’s Home Department, had initially sought prosecution sanction.
