NEW YORK – A new premium news platform, Noosphere, is launching tomorrow, offering a unique model for independent journalists and news consumers alike. Founded by former PBS war correspondent Jane Ferguson, the mobile-first platform will provide unlimited access to articles, videos, and podcasts from a curated group of experienced journalists for under $20 per month.
Noosphere’s design incorporates elements of popular social media platforms like TikTok, presenting news in a visually engaging, endlessly scrolling feed. This format aims to attract a wider audience while allowing journalists to monetize their work, a challenge highlighted by Ferguson’s experience in the rapidly changing media landscape. She cited the decline of traditional broadcasting and the lack of viable platforms for independent journalists as the impetus for creating Noosphere.
The platform is launching with over a dozen journalists, with plans to expand rapidly. Journalists are invited to join by application, ensuring quality reporting. Revenue from subscriptions, starting at $15 and rising to $19.99 per month, will be shared among the participating journalists based on engagement metrics.
Ferguson envisions Noosphere as a collaborative space, potentially partnering with existing news organizations to provide them with access to a high-caliber network of journalists and content. The platform’s initial funding of approximately $1 million was secured from private investors. Noosphere aims to provide a sustainable model for journalism, addressing the challenges faced by many talented professionals in the evolving media ecosystem.
