**Chennai, February 23, 2025** – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced significant upgrades for North Chennai’s infrastructure, including measures to combat pollution and improve public safety. A recent mass cleaning drive removed 79.25 tonnes of garbage and 189.48 tonnes of debris across five zones: Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Tondiarpet, and Royapuram. Tondiarpet saw the most garbage cleared (42.88 tonnes), while Tiruvottiyur had the most debris removal (156.82 tonnes). The operation involved 528 workers and 158 machinery units across numerous tenements and households.

Addressing concerns raised by the Regional Deputy Commissioner (North) about sewage discharge into Captain Cotton Canal, the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewage Board (CMWSSB) has been instructed to rectify the problem. Further improvements include twice-weekly mosquito fogging, regular canal silt and debris removal, and park repairs and maintenance, including the installation of new lighting and the appointment of a watchman in Samathi Poo Colony. Public toilets in Gandhipuram will also receive sanitary napkin dispensers. These initiatives aim to significantly enhance the quality of life for North Chennai residents.
