**Bengaluru, Karnataka, February 24, 2025** – The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has launched a crackdown on water wastage, issuing 112 fines totaling ₹5.6 lakh in the past week. The move comes amidst rising temperatures, depleting groundwater levels, and warnings from the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc) about a potential water shortage.
According to BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar, the board issued a circular on February 17th prohibiting the use of drinking water for non-potable purposes, including vehicle cleaning, gardening, and decorative fountains. Despite existing regulations under the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Act, 1964, widespread misuse continues.
The highest number of fines (33) were issued in the South Zone, followed by 28 each in the West and East zones, and 23 in the North zone. Mr. Manohar emphasized the precious nature of Bengaluru’s water supply, transported from nearly 100 kilometers away, urging citizens to cooperate and conserve. He announced that the fine campaign will be intensified in the coming days to deter further water misuse. The BWSSB is appealing to residents to report instances of water wastage and to practice responsible water usage to ensure equitable distribution.
