Fri Feb 21 14:29:51 UTC 2025: ## Etna’s Fiery Show: Lava Meets Snow in Spectacular Eruption

**Catania, Italy** – Mount Etna, Europe’s highest volcano, put on a breathtaking display this week, as lava from the Bocca Nuova crater flowed down its snow-covered slopes. The dramatic eruption, which began on February 11th according to Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, captivated viewers worldwide after videos and photos of the fiery spectacle went viral on social media.

The contrast between the bright orange lava and the pristine white snow created a stunning, albeit destructive, scene. Volcanologist Boris Behncke of the Etna Observatory reported that the lava flow reached an elevation of approximately 1,950 meters, damaging trees near a service road.

The eruption temporarily disrupted air travel. Catania Airport diverted flights on Sunday and Monday due to ash clouds, but has since resumed normal operations. This is not an uncommon occurrence, with the airport frequently closing due to Etna’s volcanic activity. A similar event in 2023 led to significant flight delays and cancellations.

The eruption serves as a reminder of Etna’s power and its status as the world’s most active stratovolcano. Standing at approximately 3,350 meters (almost 11,000 feet), it continues to fascinate and occasionally disrupt life in the surrounding region. While the current eruption has subsided, Etna’s continued activity remains a focal point for scientists and onlookers alike.
