**Bayeux, France** – The Bayeux Tapestry Museum in Normandy, France, will close its doors for a major renovation project from September 1, 2025, until October 2027. This means history buffs have a limited time to witness the famed 11th-century embroidered textile before its temporary disappearance.
The tapestry, a nearly 70-meter-long masterpiece depicting the Norman conquest of England in 1066, is a globally significant historical artifact. It’s renowned for its detailed scenes, including the dramatic depiction of the Battle of Hastings and an early portrayal of Halley’s Comet.
The museum’s closure will allow for a comprehensive renovation and conservation effort, described by Bayeux Mayor Patrick Gomont as the “most complex and ambitious project… ever undertaken by the Town of Bayeux.” The project, which began with initial conservation work in January 2025, involves the creation of a new extension designed by British architectural firm RSHP, doubling the museum’s exhibition space.
The new facility will feature a state-of-the-art, hermetically sealed display chamber designed to protect the fragile tapestry from light, climate fluctuations, and pollution. This will ensure the preservation of the artifact, including its remarkably vibrant plant-based dyes, for generations to come. The tapestry will also rest on a specially designed inclined support to further protect its delicate embroidery.
Visitors wishing to see the tapestry before the closure must do so before 7 pm local time on August 31, 2025. The museum encourages all those interested in seeing this piece of history in person to visit before the renovations begin.
