Srinagar, J&K – A move by Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) police to remove a hoarding urging tourists to refrain from consuming alcohol and drugs has sparked outrage among political parties in the region. The hoarding, erected by the Traders Association Central Lal Chowk Srinagar (TALCS), pleaded with visitors to “respect our culture and tradition.”
The police action, which occurred on Friday, prompted criticism from various political figures. National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi questioned the legality of the removal, suggesting it was an attempt to silence Kashmiri voices and accusing the administration of creating an “Orwellian nightmare.” He urged the police to act with respect for local sensitivities.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) echoed the criticism, launching a signature campaign advocating for a complete ban on alcohol sales in J&K. PDP leader Iltija Mufti condemned the police action, arguing there’s no link between tourism and alcohol sales and pointing to other Indian states that have successfully implemented alcohol bans. She highlighted a bill already introduced in the J&K Assembly by the party to achieve this.
Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also expressed concern, stating that the seizure of the hoarding raises questions about the authorities’ motives and suggesting support for such civic initiatives is needed.
Traders reported increasing incidents of intoxicated tourists causing disturbances in Lal Chowk, Srinagar’s main commercial hub, prompting their initial appeal. The incident has raised questions about the balance between promoting tourism and preserving local culture and sensibilities in the region.
