**KOHIMA, Nagaland (Nagaland Tribune) –** Oriental College Kohima (OCK) observed International Mother Language Day on February 21st, 2025, with a focus on preserving and promoting the diverse linguistic heritage of Nagaland and beyond. The event, held in the college auditorium, featured student performances in various mother tongues, highlighting the importance of linguistic diversity.

Principal Dr. Khriereizhünuo Dzüvichü addressed the gathering, noting a positive shift in societal attitudes towards indigenous languages. While English dominance was once prevalent, she observed a growing appreciation for mother tongues. Dr. Dzüvichü emphasized the urgency of preserving several vulnerable Naga dialects identified by UNESCO, urging students to actively research and promote their use. She highlighted the crucial role of youth in safeguarding this cultural heritage.

Students from different semesters participated in the celebrations with performances ranging from recitations of John 3:16 to group songs and news readings, all delivered in their native languages. The diverse student body of OCK, representing tribes such as Konyak, Pochury, Angami, and others, as well as students from Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nepal, contributed to the event’s rich cultural tapestry. The event was chaired by Chubanenla Imchen, Dean of Students Welfare.
