**Ostend, Belgium –** A suspected norovirus outbreak has struck the P&O Iona cruise ship, sickening hundreds of passengers and crew during a seven-day voyage through Northern Europe. The ship, currently passing Belgium, carries approximately 5,000 passengers and 1,800 crew members.
Passengers described scenes of widespread vomiting in various areas of the ship, including restaurants, decks, and outside cabins. While P&O Cruises confirmed that some guests have experienced gastrointestinal illness, they stated the affected percentage is less than one percent (approximately 500 people) of the total onboard. The cruise line did not provide an update on the number of affected crew members.
A P&O spokesperson emphasized the company’s adherence to established health protocols in collaboration with global and regional public health authorities. Passengers unable to participate in shore excursions due to illness will receive full refunds.
Norovirus, a highly contagious virus causing acute gastroenteritis (commonly known as the stomach flu), is the leading cause of foodborne illness worldwide. Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration. While there’s no specific treatment, rehydration and frequent handwashing are crucial.
This incident comes amid a wider surge in norovirus cases globally. Recent reports from the UK’s NHS indicated a record high number of hospitalizations due to the virus, while the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also reported an outbreak earlier this year.
