**Orange, CA –** Chapman University has welcomed renowned philosopher of biology Thomas Pradeu as its newest Presidential Fellow. Pradeu, a tenured senior investigator at France’s National Centre for Scientific Research and the University of Bordeaux, will spend each January on campus, beginning in 2024.
Pradeu’s expertise spans philosophy of science, immunology, and cancer biology. His research, published in leading scientific and philosophical journals, explores the conceptual foundations of biological and biomedical sciences. His 2012 book, “The Limits of the Self,” won the prestigious 2015 Lakatos Award for its profound examination of the immune system’s implications for understanding identity and selfhood.
While at Chapman, Pradeu will collaborate with faculty, teach an undergraduate immunology course, and co-organize an annual conference bridging philosophy and science. Dean Michael Ibba of Schmid College of Science and Technology lauded Pradeu’s contributions, highlighting his collaborative spirit and significant contributions to the university.
Pradeu’s distinguished career also includes fellowships at Stanford University and a professorship at Paris-Sorbonne University. His appointment as a Presidential Fellow underscores Chapman University’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary research and attracting leading scholars in the field.
