**Chennai, February 21, 2025** – The Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) Chennai campus observed International Mother Language Day on Friday with a special event emphasizing the importance of preserving and promoting mother tongues. The event featured students from various Indian states showcasing their native languages and highlighting their cultural significance.
G.V. Selvam, VIT vice-president, stressed the economic benefits of prioritizing mother tongues, citing examples of countries like India, Japan, Germany, France, China, and Israel that place significant value on their native languages. He underscored the importance of Tamil, emphasizing that abandoning it would lead to its demise.
Miyata Kenji, Deputy Consul-General of Japan in Chennai, also spoke, highlighting the crucial role of language in fostering cross-cultural understanding and friendship. The event was attended by other VIT officials, including Pro Vice-Chancellor T. Thyagarajan and Additional Registrar P.K. Manoharan.
