Fri Feb 21 19:30:56 UTC 2025: ## South Africa Dominates Afghanistan in Champions Trophy Opener

**Karachi, Pakistan** – South Africa cruised to a convincing 107-run victory over Afghanistan in their opening Champions Trophy match at the National Stadium in Karachi on Friday. Ryan Rickelton’s maiden ODI century anchored South Africa’s impressive 315-6, while their pace attack restricted Afghanistan to a paltry 208 in 43.3 overs.

Rickelton scored a 106-ball 103, studded with seven boundaries and a six, before being unfortunately run out. He received valuable support from Temba Bavuma (58), Rassie van der Dussen (52), and Aiden Markram (52*), who propelled South Africa past the 300-run mark in the final overs. Afghanistan’s bowling attack struggled, with star leg-spinner Rashid Khan failing to take a wicket and conceding 59 runs.

In response, Afghanistan’s chase faltered early, losing wickets at crucial moments. Rahmat Shah’s 90 was a lone bright spot amidst the collapse. Kagiso Rabada (3-36), Wiaan Mulder (2-36), and Lungi Ngidi (2-56) spearheaded South Africa’s bowling attack, consistently dismantling the Afghan batting order. Afghanistan’s top-order struggled, with key players failing to deliver.

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma praised his team’s clinical performance, highlighting both their batting prowess and their disciplined bowling. Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi attributed the loss to their poor batting display.

The victory puts South Africa in a strong position in Group B, where they will face further challenges. The tournament continues with Australia and England clashing in Lahore on Saturday. Group A features heavyweights Pakistan, India, New Zealand, and Bangladesh, with the India-Pakistan match-up scheduled for Sunday. The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals.
