**Washington D.C.** – Just one month into President Trump’s second term, Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is making headlines with its aggressive cost-cutting measures. Created by executive order, the temporary agency, tasked with streamlining the federal government, claims to have already saved $55 billion.
DOGE’s actions have included massive cuts to federal programs, workforce reductions, and the cancellation of numerous contracts and leases. The agency has cited fraud detection, contract renegotiations, and asset sales as contributing factors to the claimed savings. While DOGE’s website displays evidence of some savings, including $8.6 billion from the cancellation of 1,127 contracts across 39 federal departments and agencies, it acknowledges that not all documentation is yet available online.
The agency has targeted several key departments, notably the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which Musk controversially labeled a “criminal organization.” USAID’s website was temporarily shut down, and its direct-hire staff placed on administrative leave, following the significant reduction of its budget by at least $6.5 billion.
Other substantial cuts include: $502 million from the Department of Education, $232 million from the Social Security Administration, $192 million from the General Services Administration, $173 million from the Agriculture Department, $152 million from the Department of Health and Human Services, $133 million from the Transportation Department, and $119 million from the Commerce Department. DOGE also highlights the cancellation of a $21 million USAID grant for voter turnout in India.
DOGE officials state that only 20% of the total claimed savings are currently documented online, with plans to release further details in the coming weeks. They also acknowledge the possibility of errors and omissions in the reported figures. The agency, operating under a Presidential order, is slated to conclude its mission on July 4, 2026. The sweeping changes implemented by DOGE have sparked considerable debate and scrutiny, with critics questioning the transparency and potential long-term consequences of such drastic measures.
