**HONOLULU, Hawaii (February 22, 2025)** — Seven people were injured, three critically, in an explosion at the Aston at The Whaler resort on Kaanapali Beach in west Maui, Hawaii, Thursday night. Maui police and video footage show the blast occurred near a swimming pool, scattering debris across a popular tourist area.
Preliminary investigations suggest a malfunctioning liquefied petroleum gas grill used in the resort’s common area may be responsible. The injured range in age from 18 to 74. While witness statements point to a possible grill malfunction, the official cause remains under investigation. Authorities confirmed that no evacuations were necessary for those in the surrounding area. Aqua-Aston Hospitality, which operates the resort, has been contacted for comment. The incident occurred several miles from the site of the devastating 2023 Lahaina wildfire.
