Fri Feb 21 23:38:32 UTC 2025: ## NMHU Professor’s Suicide Prevention Research Wins International Recognition

**Las Vegas, NM** – New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) is celebrating the achievement of Dr. Paul James “PJ” Sedillo, whose groundbreaking research on suicide prevention has earned international acclaim. Sedillo’s peer-reviewed article on risk and resiliency factors related to suicide and suicidal ideation has been selected as one of the best papers of 2025 by the International Journal of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (IJAHSS).

The article details Sedillo’s Resiliency Theory of suicidal ideation and introduces the SOAR (Sedillo/Comallie-Caplan) Suicide Observation Assessment of Resiliency, a new tool designed to identify both positive and negative factors influencing mental health. This innovative assessment aims to pinpoint stressors and facilitate real-time solutions for individuals aged 18-60+, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gifted status.

“This tool could provide individuals with the means to deter suicide or suicidal ideation,” Sedillo explained. “By identifying the root causes of stress, we can address them faster and more effectively.”

Sedillo’s work, inspired by his own personal experiences, offers a user-friendly and adaptable method for intervening in suicidal crises. He hopes to expand his research nationwide to reach a wider population.

Beyond his research, Sedillo is a dedicated advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and gifted education. As NMHU’s department chair for special education, he strives to create an inclusive environment where students feel empowered to embrace their identities and pursue their passions.

The IJAHSS recognition underscores the urgent need for effective suicide prevention tools. Sedillo emphasizes the importance of continued work in this field and encourages those struggling with suicidal thoughts to seek help.
