**Thalassery, Kerala – February 21, 2025** – Police in Thalassery have filed charges against 58 individuals, including five identified CPI(M) activists, for allegedly interfering with a police arrest and obstructing officers during the Ilathu Thazhaey Manolikkavu festival.

The incident unfolded Thursday evening when a group of young men disrupted the festival, leading to the arrest of Deepin for allegedly assaulting a police officer. Subsequently, a larger group of approximately 55 CPI(M) activists allegedly intervened, forcibly releasing Deepin from police custody. This action resulted in additional charges against the group for allegedly obstructing police duties, issuing threats, and potentially other offenses under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (Sections 189(2), 191(2), 126(2), 351(2), 265, 132, and 190).

The case was registered based on a complaint filed by Thalassery sub-inspector V.V. Deepthi. This follows an earlier suo moto case filed against seven CPI(M) workers for allegedly obstructing police and making threats during a separate clash between CPI(M) and BJP workers at the temple earlier that day. One individual, Lineesh, was arrested in connection with the earlier incident. The police investigation is ongoing.
