LUCKNOW, UTTAR PRADESH – Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (BCML) announced a ₹2,850 crore investment to build India’s first integrated biopolymer plant in Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh. The groundbreaking ceremony was conducted by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The facility, slated to open in October 2026, will produce 80,000 tonnes of Polylactic Acid (PLA) annually. PLA is a biodegradable alternative to single-use plastics, with applications ranging from straws and cutlery to food packaging.
The plant, powered by 100% renewable energy, will source its raw material from BCML’s existing sugar factory, creating a closed-loop system. Global technology providers Sulzer (Switzerland), Alpine Engineering GmbH (Austria), and Jacobs Solutions Inc (U.S.) are involved in the project. The company says the plant will not only reduce reliance on fossil fuels but also position Uttar Pradesh as a leader in biopolymer production and boost India’s bio-based economy. The project will be financed through a mix of equity and debt (40% and 60% respectively). BCML Chairman and Managing Director Vivek Saraogi hailed the project as a “monumental leap” in India’s sustainable industrial journey.
