KARACHI, PAKISTAN – South Africa launched their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign with a resounding 107-run victory over Afghanistan in Karachi on Friday. Opener Ryan Rickelton led the Proteas’ charge with a magnificent century (103 off 106 balls), one of three centuries scored in the first three matches of the tournament, while Temba Bavuma (58), Rassie van der Dussen (52), and Aiden Markram (50*) all contributed significant half-centuries to propel South Africa to a challenging 315/6.

Afghanistan, in reply, struggled against the South African pace attack. Rahmat Shah offered the most resistance with a 92-ball 90, but the rest of the batting lineup crumbled under pressure, bowled out for 208 in 43.3 overs. Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada were the chief destroyers with the ball for South Africa.

The win puts South Africa at the top of Group B, setting a strong tone for their title ambitions. Afghanistan, despite recent strong performances, will need to improve significantly to compete in the tournament.
