Fri Feb 21 15:36:15 UTC 2025: ## Record Number of Olive Ridley Turtles Nest at Odisha Beach

**Bhubaneswar, Odisha – February 21, 2025** – A record-breaking 6.5 lakh endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles have arrived at Rushikulya beach in Odisha’s Ganjam district for mass nesting, marking the largest congregation in two years. This surge in numbers follows sporadic nesting activity in the previous two years.

Prem Kumar Jha, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), expressed elation at the significant increase, noting that this surpasses all previous records for the Rushikulya beach. Authorities anticipate a similar large-scale nesting at the Gahirmatha site in Kendrapara district within the week.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is actively involved in protecting the turtles through “Operation Olivia,” which runs from November 1st to May 31st. The operation utilizes 29 ICG ships and aircraft to monitor the area, preventing human interference, such as poaching and disruptive leisure activities. Approximately 150 fishing boats have been inspected to ensure compliance with regulations regarding turtle excluder devices. The ICG reports that Operation Olivia has significantly reduced turtle casualties. The ICG’s commitment to protecting endangered species under the Wildlife Act of 1972, began in 1991 and continues to this day.

This successful nesting season is a welcome sign for wildlife conservation efforts in the region.
