**Charlottesville, VA –** Renowned musician Dave Matthews’ mother, Valerie Matthews, passed away peacefully at her Charlottesville home on February 9th at the age of 87. She was surrounded by her family, including Dave, his brother, and sister, in her final moments.
According to sources close to the family, Valerie Matthews’ health took a sudden turn for the worse at the beginning of February due to natural causes. She entered hospice care shortly thereafter. This sudden decline is believed to be the reason Dave Matthews cancelled a scheduled performance at the FireAid concert last month.
Born in South Africa in 1935, Valerie Matthews was an architect who worked in London and New York before settling in Charlottesville with her family. She is survived by her three children, six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, a brother, a brother-in-law, and step-family members. Her husband, John Matthews, predeceased her in 1977. Valerie remarried in 1991.
