Fri Feb 21 07:51:02 UTC 2025: **China Intercepts Philippine Aircraft Over Disputed South China Sea Islands, Heightening Tensions**

MANILA/BEIJING – Tensions in the South China Sea escalated further Thursday after China’s military intercepted three Philippine aircraft over the disputed Spratly Islands. This marks the second such incident this week, following a close encounter on Tuesday between a Chinese helicopter and a Philippine patrol plane near the Scarborough Shoal.

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Southern Theatre Command stated that it “drove away” two Cessna 208 planes and a light N-22 aircraft, accusing the Philippines of provocative actions aimed at asserting “illegal claims.” The command further criticized Manila for allegedly misrepresenting China’s actions.

The Tuesday incident involved a Chinese military helicopter flying within three meters of a Philippine patrol plane over the Scarborough Shoal, an area within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone but under Chinese control since 2012. Foreign media aboard the Philippine aircraft witnessed the 30-minute standoff and reported warnings issued to the Chinese pilot regarding dangerous behavior.

Both incidents come amidst broader regional tensions. Last week, three Chinese warships entered Australia’s exclusive economic zone, prompting concerns from Canberra. China also announced potential live-fire naval drills off Australia’s coast.

The ongoing disputes over the Spratly and Paracel Islands, where China has built numerous outposts, highlight the increasingly complex and fraught situation in the South China Sea. The conflicting claims of multiple nations, including Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam, continue to fuel regional instability.
