Thu Feb 20 08:52:49 UTC 2025: ## BJP’s Verma Snubbed for Delhi CM Post; Gupta Appointed Instead
**New Delhi** – In a surprise move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed first-time MLA Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, overlooking Parvesh Verma, who had been widely tipped for the position after defeating incumbent Arvind Kejriwal in the recent elections.
Verma, son of former Delhi CM Sahib Singh Verma, secured a significant victory over Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. This win, coupled with his experience as a former MLA and MP, positioned him as a frontrunner. However, at a legislature party meeting attended by central observers Ravi Shankar Prasad and O P Dhankar, Verma himself was among those who proposed Gupta’s name.
The announcement sparked a flurry of surprised reactions and comments on social media. While Verma’s nomination was unexpected, sources suggest he may still play a significant role in the new government, possibly as Deputy CM or a cabinet minister. A separate meeting between central observers and senior party leaders, including Verma, followed the announcement.
Gupta’s swearing-in ceremony, along with other cabinet ministers, is scheduled for February 20th at Ramlila Maidan. Verma, a management graduate known for his outspoken nature, has a long history with the BJP, beginning his political career with the RSS in 1991. He previously served as an MLA and won the West Delhi Lok Sabha seat twice.
