Thu Feb 20 16:03:00 UTC 2025: **Kozhikode’s Palayam Market to Relocate to Larger Facility**

KOZHIKODE, February 20, 2025 – The bustling Palayam market in Kozhikode city is slated for relocation to a new, larger facility at Kalluthankadavu before the end of the current council term, Deputy Mayor C.P. Musafar Ahamed announced Thursday. The move, which has faced some opposition, aims to improve conditions for traders and workers.

The Kalluthankadavu complex boasts 5.5 acres of space and can accommodate 300 shops, significantly larger than the current Palayam market’s 3 acres and 153 shops. Ahamed stated that five rounds of discussions have already taken place with stakeholders, and notices have been served to 152 traders. He emphasized the Corporation’s commitment to a smooth transition, rejecting claims that the relocation is forced. The new market will offer better facilities, including easier access for large lorries.

Council members debated the relocation, with some expressing concerns about ensuring the rehabilitation of all traders and the need for a consensus with the trading community. However, officials dismissed claims that the Kalluthankadavu site was insufficient, citing its ample space. They also condemned what they termed “orchestrated campaigns” of misinformation surrounding the move. The relocation is expected to proceed despite some ongoing resistance. The council also addressed a separate issue concerning an ongoing strike by ASHA workers.
