Thu Feb 20 08:59:41 UTC 2025: ## Madras High Court Reopens Temple Closed Due to Caste Clashes

**Chennai, February 20, 2025** – The Madras High Court has ordered the reopening of the Dharmaraja Droupadi Amman Temple in Melpathi village, Villupuram district, which was shut down in June 2023 following caste clashes. The court’s decision, delivered Thursday, allows public worship to resume, but with a stern warning: any attempt to prevent Scheduled Caste devotees from entering the temple will be met with legal action.

The temple had been closed indefinitely by the Villupuram Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) following the clashes. While the court initially allowed only daily puja by a designated priest, it delayed a decision on full reopening pending the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Concerns about potential renewed violence were raised by the government, but the court ultimately ruled in favor of reopening, emphasizing the right of all castes to worship. The judge rejected a request for police protection during worship, questioning the need for such measures at every temple. The Revenue, HR&CE, and Police departments are now responsible for ensuring the smooth reopening and preventing any further disturbances.
