Thu Feb 20 12:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Santee Cooper Sues Liberty Steel Georgetown for Over $7 Million in Unpaid Electricity Bills
**GEORGETOWN, SC** – Santee Cooper has filed a $7 million lawsuit against Liberty Steel Georgetown Inc. for breach of contract, alleging the steel mill failed to pay for electricity service. The lawsuit, filed in [Court Name – needs to be added], claims Liberty Steel defaulted on its agreement with Santee Cooper, signed in May 2023, which guaranteed electricity service for five years.
The utility provider states that Liberty Steel failed to make payments in November and December 2024, totaling $334,233.06. Following repeated attempts to resolve the outstanding balance, Santee Cooper terminated the contract in January 2025 and is now seeking the remaining balance owed under the agreement – a staggering $6,628,482.
The lawsuit comes amidst existing challenges for the Georgetown steel mill. In October 2024, Liberty Steel idled operations citing unfavorable market conditions. City officials have warned that if the mill remains idle for a full year from October 11, 2024, the city could permanently shut it down.
ABC15 has reached out to Liberty USA and GFG Alliance, the owners of the steel mill, for comment but has yet to receive a response. Meanwhile, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Pee Dee, Border Belt, and parts of the Grand Strand from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning.
