**New Delhi, February 20** – Rekha Gupta, a first-time MLA, was sworn in as Delhi’s new Chief Minister today at a grand ceremony held at the historic Ramlila Maidan. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a landslide victory in the recent assembly elections, winning 48 out of 70 seats, ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) seven-year rule. Gupta’s appointment marks a historic return to power for the BJP in Delhi after a 27-year absence and makes her the fourth woman to hold the office.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and numerous other high-ranking BJP officials. Security was tight, with over 5,000 police and paramilitary personnel deployed around the venue. The event, originally scheduled for 4:30 pm, was moved to 11:00 am.
Gupta, who previously served as President of the Delhi University Students’ Union, expressed her gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and the BJP leadership for their confidence. She vowed to prioritize fulfilling the party’s commitments to the people of Delhi and to work towards achieving Prime Minister Modi’s vision for the national capital.
The AAP, while congratulating Gupta, criticized the BJP for the delay in naming a Chief Minister after the election results. Outgoing Chief Minister Atishi expressed hope that the new government would deliver on its promises. Similarly, former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal extended his best wishes to Gupta.
The Ramlila Maidan, chosen for its historical significance as the site of a major 1975 protest, underwent extensive cleaning and renovation in preparation for the ceremony. The BJP highlighted the event as a symbolic return to power and a commitment to the development of Delhi.
