**Kolkata, West Bengal –** Border Security Force (BSF) troops in West Bengal have successfully foiled a gold smuggling operation along the India-Bangladesh border. On February 14th, BSF personnel apprehended a smuggler near the Bithari Border Outpost (BOP) in North 24 Parganas district.
The suspect, a resident of Padamvila village, was carrying 25 gold biscuits weighing 3.42 kg, with an estimated value of ₹2,95,90,182 (approximately $3.5 million USD). The gold was concealed in a cavity under the fuel tank of his motorcycle.
The BSF acted on intelligence indicating an impending smuggling attempt. Following the arrest, interrogation revealed the smuggler had been working with a Bangladeshi counterpart for two months, receiving instructions to deliver the gold for a payment of ₹1,500.
DIG N.K. Pandey, spokesperson for the BSF’s South Bengal Frontier, stated that the force remains committed to combating smuggling and illegal border crossings, despite the evolving tactics employed by smugglers. The arrested individual has been handed over to the relevant authorities for further legal proceedings.
