**CHENNAI, February 19, 2025** – Professor Mithra G Augustine, a distinguished educationalist, zoologist, and former principal of Madras Christian College (MCC), passed away on February 18th in Tambaram. Professor Augustine, who also served as the director of the Ecumenical Christian Centre in Whitefield, Bengaluru, is being remembered for his significant contributions to higher education in India and his unwavering commitment to academic integrity.
Professor Augustine’s career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on generations of MCC students. His leadership during MCC’s transition to an autonomous college in the late 1970s—one of the first in Tamil Nadu—was instrumental in establishing the institution as a model for academic excellence. He spearheaded syllabus revisions, empowered faculty development, and fostered a decentralized departmental structure that allowed for greater innovation and responsiveness to evolving academic fields. His tenure as principal also saw the strengthening of the college’s residential hall system, maintaining a balance between discipline and a supportive community environment.
Beyond his administrative achievements, Professor Augustine embodied the ideals of a holistic education, emphasizing critical thinking, moral compass, and courageous living. His commitment to these principles was reflected in his own life, as evidenced by his decision to return to India after completing his doctoral studies at Ohio State University, choosing to serve his country rather than pursuing opportunities abroad. He played a crucial role in MCC’s 150th anniversary celebrations, attended by then-Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. His later work at the Ecumenical Christian Centre extended his influence beyond academia, promoting interfaith relations and international understanding.
Professor Augustine’s passing has been met with widespread grief and tributes from former students and colleagues, highlighting his lasting impact on the lives he touched. He is survived by his wife, Buela Vasantha, and their two children, Michael Gandham and Dr. Melita M Theyagaraj. His legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of integrity, vision, and a deep commitment to education in shaping a more humane and purposeful society.
