Wed Feb 19 03:17:49 UTC 2025: ## Tesla to Open First Indian Showrooms in Delhi and Mumbai

**Mumbai, India –** Tesla is poised to enter the Indian market, with sources confirming the company has finalized locations for its first showrooms in New Delhi and Mumbai. This marks a significant turnaround after the electric vehicle (EV) giant delayed its India expansion in 2022 due to regulatory hurdles.

The company has reportedly secured approximately 5,000 square foot spaces in Aerocity, New Delhi, and the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai – both prime commercial locations. While opening dates remain unconfirmed, the move signals Tesla’s renewed commitment to the world’s third-largest auto market.

Initially, Tesla will focus on importing and selling EVs directly through these company-operated showrooms. Service centers are not included in this first phase. The company is also actively recruiting in India, with recent job postings for store and customer relationship managers.

Tesla’s entry faces challenges, however. High import duties (currently 100% on fully assembled EVs) remain a significant obstacle. While Tesla has lobbied for tariff reductions, it faces opposition from domestic automakers. Recent discussions between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump regarding trade policies have raised hopes for potential tariff adjustments that could benefit Tesla.

The luxury EV segment in India is growing, and Tesla’s arrival is expected to intensify competition with existing players like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Hyundai. The success of Tesla’s India strategy will largely depend on future tariff negotiations and the government’s willingness to incentivize EV adoption.
