This hiring push follows a recent meeting between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US. The meeting appears to have solidified Tesla’s plans for India, with open positions ranging from customer-facing roles like sales advisors and customer support specialists, to backend support and operations. Positions such as Service Technician and Tesla Advisor are available in Mumbai and Delhi, while others, including Customer Engagement Manager and Delivery Operations Specialist, are currently listed for Mumbai only.
Tesla’s entry into India has been anticipated for some time, but high import duties had previously posed a significant obstacle. Musk has publicly stated that a manufacturing plant in India is contingent on the government first allowing sales. A planned visit by Musk in 2022 was cancelled due to urgent matters within Tesla.
The reduced import duty on luxury electric vehicles from 110% to 70% is a key factor facilitating Tesla’s move. Coupled with India’s burgeoning middle class and the government’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, the Indian EV market presents a significant opportunity for Tesla.
