**Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 19, 2025** – The absence of reliable statistical data is hindering the effective functioning of State Finance Commissions in Kerala, according to K.N. Harilal, chairman of the 7th State Finance Commission. Speaking at a workshop on employment data in Kerala, Dr. Harilal highlighted the critical role of accurate data in policy formulation. He criticized the delay in the decennial Census, noting that its postponement until 2025—the first time since independence—is significantly impacting effective planning.

The workshop, organized by the Public Policy Research Institute (PPRI) and the Kerala State Statistical Commission, brought together experts to discuss challenges in collecting and utilizing employment data. PPRI director Mohanakumar S. stressed the need for a comprehensive data collection mechanism that reflects Kerala’s evolving socio-economic landscape. Representatives from various organizations, including the Centre for Development Studies and the State Planning Board, also participated in the discussions. P.C.
