**Bhubaneswar, Odisha –** The death of a Nepali student at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar has sparked controversy, with the student’s father alleging mistreatment of Nepali undergraduates by the institute. Prakriti Lamsal, a third-year B.Tech student, was found dead in her hostel room on Sunday.
Following the incident, a group of Nepali students were reportedly evicted from their hostel, leading to further tension on campus. Sunil Lamsal, Prakriti’s father, arrived in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday for his daughter’s post-mortem examination at AIIMS. He accused KIIT of mistreating Nepali students, stating that the institute’s actions following his daughter’s death were unacceptable. While expressing faith in the Odisha government and police to secure justice, he highlighted the alleged eviction of students as further evidence of mistreatment.
KIIT has issued a public apology for the events, stating they were “extremely appalled” by the incident and regretted the actions of some staff members towards protesting students. The institute has taken disciplinary action, terminating two security personnel for allegedly assaulting students and suspending two hostel officials and an administrative officer pending an ongoing inquiry. KIIT also appealed to its Nepali students to resume their studies.
The institute suggested that Prakriti Lamsal may have committed suicide, possibly due to a relationship with another student and alleged blackmail. However, these claims are being investigated by police, who are also probing the allegations of mistreatment levelled by the deceased student’s father and other Nepali students. The investigation into Prakriti Lamsal’s death and the allegations of mistreatment continues.
