Wed Feb 19 01:37:00 UTC 2025: ## Hundreds of False Killer Whales Stranded on Remote Tasmanian Beach

**Melbourne, Australia – February 19, 2025** – Over 150 false killer whales are stranded on a remote beach near Arthur River in Tasmania, Australia. Authorities confirmed that of the 157 beached whales, 136 appeared to be alive as of Wednesday morning. However, the remote location, challenging ocean conditions, and difficulties transporting specialist equipment are hindering rescue efforts.

Local resident Jocelyn Flint, whose son discovered the whales, described a heartbreaking scene of whales thrashing and sinking into the sand. She believes the chances of survival are slim given the size of the whales and the powerful surf. Among the stranded whales are many calves.

This incident follows previous mass strandings in the region, including 230 pilot whales in 2022 and a record-breaking 470 long-finned pilot whales in 2020, both in Macquarie Harbor. The reasons for these mass strandings remain unclear, with possibilities including disorientation from noise, illness, injury, predator avoidance, or severe weather. Authorities have not yet called for public assistance in the rescue operation.
