**PARIS** – French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to convene another summit on the Ukraine conflict following renewed US-Russia diplomatic efforts initiated by former President Donald Trump. Macron, in an interview with regional French newspapers, stated that he believes Trump’s approach, characterized by firm language and strategic ambiguity, could pressure Russia into negotiations.
While reaffirming France’s commitment to supporting Ukraine, Macron clarified that any potential deployment of French troops would be strictly limited in scope and outside active combat zones. This possibility, he explained, is being explored jointly with Britain, focusing on deploying experts or a small contingent for support roles. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has indicated Britain’s willingness to participate.
However, Macron stressed the crucial need for US backing in providing future security guarantees to Ukraine, citing Russia’s nuclear arsenal as a key factor. He also suggested the possibility of a UN-mandated peacekeeping operation along the front lines, contingent on the outcome of negotiations.
Macron’s announcement follows a Monday meeting in Paris, attended by a select group of European nations. This smaller gathering, while intended to demonstrate unity, was reportedly strained by disagreements over troop deployments, with Germany and Italy expressing strong opposition. The exclusion of several smaller, pro-Ukraine nations also caused friction. The larger summit, scheduled for Wednesday, will include both European and non-European states. Macron himself stated he is prepared to speak directly with Vladimir Putin when the timing is appropriate within the ongoing diplomatic process.
